Kyo-mono Fan Club offers discounts

The kyoto municipal goverment and Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts recently established Kyo-mono Fan Club in which members can purchase the city’s traditional crafts for a discount at about 240 member stores.

Members are being sought for fiscal 2007. Memberships are valid for one year from April 1 at a cost of￥1000. Applications are available at the museum, ward offices and tourist information centers. Call 075-762-2670 for more information.

Seihan Mori, head priest of Kiyomizudera temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, writes the kanji character for inochi (life) on Tuesday. It was chosen by the public as the character that best represents 2006 in a contest sponsored by a Kyoto-based association. The choice reflects a series of remarkable events related to life, such as Prince Hisahito’s birth and the suicides of children who suffered bullying at school, according to the association.

Trees along Kyoto’s main street of Kawaramachi-dori will be illuminated with 50,000 lights from sunset to midnight from Dec. 9 to Jan. 8. The street is about a 200 meter walk from the Kyoto city government building. For more information, call 075-212-2340.
